Conscious nutrition for sensitive horses
Horses with a sensitive metabolism, sensitive stomach or allergies require special care – including in their feeding. Teff grass can be beneficial for sensitive horses. It is exceptionally low in sugar and fructans, but also provides highly digestible crude fibre and is a natural protein source for muscle maintenance. These properties make the palatable cobs a reliable source of gentle and balanced nutrition for sensitive horses.
A protein source that is rich in crude fibre and permanently low in sugar and fructans
Teff grass (lat. Eragrostis tef) is an ancient cultivated plant originating from East Africa. While native grasses store more sugar and fructans during periods of heat or drought, teff grass forms valuable leaf mass, which means that it is always low in sugar and fructans but rich in vital nutrients. The natural consistency of teff grass makes AGROBS® TEFFCOBS a reliable and future-proof feed – even in increasingly dry summers.
Teff grass from specialised cultivation in Bavaria
AGROBS® has been successfully growing teff grass in Bavaria since 2024. Cultivating teff grass is a demanding process that requires experience, sensitivity and suitable site conditions. As a result of this success, a valuable forage plant that has so far scarcely been used in Europe is now being regionally produced.
A well-tolerated, versatile feed
Teffcobs are highly versatile and can be fed to leisure or senior horses. Teff grass (also known as "love grass") has soft, delicate stems that provide healthy crude fibre, are easy to digest and are naturally almost starch-free – making them particularly gentle on the stomach. As a single-ingredient feed, Teffcobs are suitable for exclusion diets, allergies and intolerances. And with a favourable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, they are also well tolerated by horses that are sensitive to high calcium levels, as a forage or concentrate feed. The palatable cobs are also easy to soak, so they are a good choice for senior horses who find chewing difficult.
Responsible feeding – today and tomorrow
AGROBS® TEFFCOBS are a valuable alternative for horses that require a low-sugar, low-fructan diet. Using a low-sugar grass variety cultivated in Bavaria, Teffcobs combine innovation, regional sourcing and high tolerability to provide a natural feed to meet the needs of sensitive horses, today and in the future.
AREAS OF USE
- as supplementation to and for enhancement of the basic feed
- as part of the roughage ration to compensate for hay that is particularly rich in sugar and fructans
- as a complete roughage substitute (depending on individual feeding advice)
- as substitute for concentrated feed respectively grain
- for horses with metabolic and dietary sensitivities
- for seniors and horses with dental Problems
- in exclusion diets, for allergies and intolerances (e.g. lucerne)
FEEDING RECOMMENDATION
Depending on horse type and activity Level
- to supplement roughage: 1 kg Teffcobs replaces 1 kg hay
- as roughage (100% hay replacement, following a personalised feeding consultation): daily approx. 1.5 kg per 100 kg target body weight
- as alternative to conventional concentrated feed
- per 1 kg soak with 1.5 to 3 liters of water
- A feed scoop of 1 l holds an average of approx. 530 g of Teffcobs
AGROBS® recommends softening the cobs through soaking.
Teff grass may naturally contain small amounts of the metabolism-stimulating substance synephrine, which is considered doping-relevant according to the FN and FEI. Please observe the recommended waiting period of your (inter)national equestrian association.
As a source of minerals, we recommend a mineral feed that is adapted to the horse and its needs.
